Hello list & everybody !

I can only agree with Ville's comment, although I don't think that all
people/groups/teachers advertising themselves as kundalini-yogis deliberately
set out to be frauds. I think it's more a case of the blind trying to lead
the blind.
A good example is the 3HO/Kundalini-Yoga group founded by Yogi Bhajan. From
reading him, I'm sure he is (was?) "enlightened" with the full knowledge of
the workings and mechanics of kundalini - the problem is his organization
that calls itself kundalini-yoga, claiming the name for itself and implying
that they teach the way to activating shakti. In fact some of their teachers
don't seem to know anything at all about how and why kundalini happens, but
still believe they're practicing "kundalini-yoga" just because their
teacher/master had gone through the experience.
In itself this isn't really a problem, the world as it is is full of
illusions, everything probably has its place in the Big Undulating Scheme of
Things and interesting stuff can be learned everywhere. Let the buyer beware
however !
Deirdre mentioned the Sivananda organization - I have some personal
experience with them . They run a beautiful ashram in the Bahamas and a very
nice one in Canada near Montreal, with healthy cooking, yoga classes and
meditation every day plus a cultural program with world-class artists and
lecturers. Very nice if one enjoys virtuoso Indian music & art or high-level
debates on quantum mechanics and philosophy. It's a good place to learn about
traditional hatha-yoga and Indian philosophy, the atmosphere is quite
orthodox and disciplined and the books written by Swami Sivananda and Swami
Vishnu cover a lot of yogic ground.
However, the teachings & general vibes of the organization are again based on
the experiences and lives of the gone masters Sivananda and his disciple
Vishnudevananda. It's not a good place to mention that you have an active
kundalini or that you may have even gone through phases of mystical
revelations and rapture - this seems to be reserved for deceased Indians in
robes, preferably wearing beards & having spent years living in caves. (As
for kundalini-related problems - better go for a long walk in Nature ....)
And anyway the whole student-teacher structure breaks down if "students"
suddenly start having real spiritual experiences - other students and most
"teachers" don't really like this, since the taken-for-granted roles and
identities are rattled.
