I'm sure seeing a lot of posts on the k-list lately that remind me of all I
dislike about the rabid, foaming at the mouth, fundamentalist Christian
sects. I know whereof I speak: I live in what must certainly be the buckle
of the Bible Belt. If I wander into one of our local, rural churches, I
hear sermons just like some of what I'm reading here on the list--if you
ain't vegetarian, you ain't sh*t; my path kicks your path's b*tt. Ok,
you're not coming right out and saying it, but that's what it reads like
from where I sit. In the local Southern Baptist church, it comes out that
way too--if you're not Christian, you can't be "saved," but of course,
other, non-Southern Baptists aren't QUITE as saved, it's hinted--and my
ears hear, if you ain't SoBap, you ain't sh*t, etc.

THIS IS ENLIGHTENMENT?

Thank you, I'm glad to be unenlightened then. I hope to remain so. Seems
better by far than being in the unenviable position of having to be better
than everyone else--that's a lot of status to have to constantly maintain.
And making all those categories--whew, that's gotta be a lot of work.
Let's see, someone who eats meat is...what? very sick? (Zala's formula:
sick x 3) But how sick if they eat maybe just one piece of fish, just once?
And how sick if they eat no meat, but have murdered, oh, say several
million Jews, as Hitler did? That's a toughie. And what about someone who
eats dairy products, and which ones, at that? And then one must, I
suppose, make a category for someone who's helped thousands of people, like
a lady I knew in New Orleans who organized a sort of portable soup kitchen
to bring food to the homeless--but, she ate meat.

Too many categories for me to keep straight. I think I like it better this
way: there is only one category. We are all one, equally loved by the
Universe, and equally capable of total realization. There might be, in
fact, many, many paths to that goal--I believe this to be true in any
event, although I can't prove it. In my view of things, none of these
paths is "better" or "worse"--only "different" (which is not the same thing
as better or worse). I believe, with all my heart, that each of is in on
the right path for us. It might not work so well for another, so why try
to whack others over the head with the "path bludgeon"? The only person
you can lead to enlightenment, after all, is yourself.

But if I wanted to get the hellfire sermon, which posts like Zala's so
strongly resemble, I can just walk into the church a couple miles down the
road and get my fill of it there. Except I do get better music there than
on the k-list.
