The word 'skeptic' derived from a word meaning 'scorpion', as to a
relationship to it's poisonous 'sting'. It defined a very negative,
hostile outlook, in which there is a pre-determined position of
agressively rejecting, seeking to disprove, (disapprove?). To discredit.
Yes, to de-bunk. It is not at all the same as to be carefully
discerning, cautious, abot accepting or beleiving anything. The former s
a closed minded negative condition, working from a pre-existing
negative, rejecting postion, determination to disproove, discredit,
while the latter is open minded by cautious, open to examining and
considerig from a neutral postion.
The skeptic is, therefore, most always subject to falling fgor the
tricks of the mind such as using reverse logic, circular logic, othwer
forms of faulty logic, in order to come to the determination it has
pre-chosen. A skeptic will find a way to discredit even the most
powerful evidence that conflicts with the pre-determined postion, or
opinion.
Most people do misuse it, when what they really mean is to be careful,
cautious, discerning.
