Then I would also suggest that before you eat another plant (not speaking
of the fruit of the plant, as a peach or tomato for instance), that you
open yourself up enough to hear the plant scream in pain. Please, none of
that "oh, they're not 'sentient'" poppycock. They're every bit as
sentient, perhaps more intelligent in some ways, as animals. They might
not express it in the same way, but if you're willing to listen, you will
hear.

If you want to avoid causing pain, quit eating altogether, or eat just
fruits and nuts. Better yet, quit breathing. Every breath we take inhales
entire universes of life. And don't forget walking--we thoughtlessly crush
blades of grass and tiny insects with every step.

Seems more sensible, though, to approach the act of eating more reverently,
blessing not only the food on the plate, but the creatures, plant or
animal, who gave their lives that we might eat. Most people take food--of
any sort--for granted, but it's an entire series of miracles, from life, to
death, to life again, that brought this sustenance to our plates.

Please, let's do put this "food fight" aside. For the record, no one is
more saintly or spiritual just because they don't eat meat. No one is less
saintly or spiritual if they do eat meat. It's what goes on in the heart,
mind, and soul--not the stomach--that decides that.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day in the U.S.: perhaps instead of pointing
fingers at one another and condemning one group of people for their eating
habits, we can say blessings and thankyous. It's nice to set one day a
year aside for blessing and thanking--although personally, I think every
day should be "the" day for it.
