Good point. Most plants produce toxins (mostly insecticides) to try and
protect themselves from being eaten. This includes our common vegetables
- tomatoes are, I understand, part of the belladonna family (Deadly
Nightshade)? Anyway, the plant itself is poisonous. Potatoes also
contain toxins (they always give me stomach upsets so I avoid them).
Peppers taste so good because that hot or peppery flavour is a toxin
which our liver just happens to be able to deal with - other animals
won't touch them. Lots of people have problems with common foodstuffs
such as wheat, corn, and so on. Why? Because the foods are toxic.
All those toxins are *not* healthy for us in the long run and eating too
many vegetables puts our body at risk of long-term toxicity. Numerous
illnesses have plant matter as a suspect, somewhere along the line
(especially intestinal/digestive problems and some cancers). Animals at
least are not toxic, barring infectious diseases and putrefaction, of
course: nothing is actually safe.
