Count me among those who were hard pressed to understand most of the
terminology used in Dan's initial post trashing Sai Baba. But l feel that it
is important to make information available about spiritual teachers and gurus
who are not authentic and are thereby harming people -- especially when it's
someone like SB who is in a position to harm millions of people. SB may have
had mystical power once, but there's been evidence for a long time that he's
been faking it. And, as some on the list have indicated, there are tell-tale
signs all over the place about SB anyway (as l discovered when l was at his
ashram many years ago). One can feel a distaste for destructive rumors, but
the sad fact is that when it comes to eastern gurus who have become famous
in the west, the scandalous rumors have virtually all turned out to be true.
Also customary have been the institutional denial and labeling of accusers
that have accompanied them.
Discovering one's guru to be false is
one of the most painful things that can happen to anyone on the path, and
someone in this position deserves loads of compassion. But the main thing a
student should learn from a teacher is to insist on the truth --- the truth
is what ultimately teaches and frees us, and there is simply no substitute
for it.
