Cruelty is a judgment humans make. Animals don't relate to life and
death the way humans do.. wolves have been known to simply leave the body
and die, when they have been captured. Whales beach themselves. A rabbit's
heart will stop from fright, before it feels the jaws of the fox. Life eats
life: that is nature, but within the cruelty, there are strange mercies.
Light of the ultraviolet spectrum, that humans cannot percieve unless they
learn to see in the dark. Quality of life is the issue.
Your argument reminds me of something druid said, when he read that heart
disease is a #1 cause of Death, in North America. It's good news. Something
has to be the #1 cause of death, people die.. better heart disease than
leprosy, or starvation, or murder, or ...
Sometimes I have had cause to remind people, who cling to old arthritic
pets who live in pain, that by taking the animal out of nature it's life
has been prolonged more than Nature intended... and part of the
responsibility of taking the creature out of nature, is providing it with a
quick exit when it's quality of life is not sustainable, as Nature would.
What we call death by "old age" is usually preceeded by a long slow
shutdown of the body's agility and faculties.. which if not for our human
social structure would result in death sooner. A lion who is too old to
hunt, or a deer with arthritis that has lost it's teeth is not going to die
of old age, it will starve to death if a predator does not come to give it
a quicker, and arguably kinder exit.
It is in the nature of humans to cling to life and prolong it by un-natural
means, out of judgments that nature does not make. Yet, we have strong
"right to die" movement for the terminally ill, and there are plenty of
people who prefer to "live fast, die young, leave a beautiful corpse" life
plan to the idea of death by old age.
