Psychologists do in my experience typically try and limit themselves in
this way: they are still trying to pretend that the subject is a science
along the lines of physics, while using statistics to skirt around the
fact that much of their data is much more subjective than that of
physics and ignoring the fact that physics has moved on from the logical
positivism that led psychology towards behaviourist nonsense decades
ago.

There are several groups in this general area, if I can characterise
them a bit:

Psychologists - more academic, studying, experimenting, denying the
subjective;
Psychoanalists - Freud, strait-jackets, drugs, fear of the irrational;
Psychotherapists - whatever school they follow - Jung, Rogers, Adler,
Piaget, etc.

Well... It isn't if it can't be measured, from a psychologist's point of
view, anyway. But this does depend on what you mean by "the realm of the
rational," since a lot of nonsense resides outside that zone.
