Subject: [K-list] Lost mantras due to ineffectiveness
From: Zala
On 1999/10/13 04:20, Zala posted thus to the K-list:
The problem of efficacityof mantra does not lie entirely with
respect to mantracaetanya. Mantraghat is also affected, but the main
concern
has to do with what is known as purashcarana in Sanskrita. As with
mantracaetanya, the concept of purashcarana is complex, and it has a dual
meaning - (1) as applied by Mahakaola and (2) as applied by the sadhaka.
To put all this in layman's terms (which is about all that I really grasp
of
the subject anyway), a mantra is like a battery. It must have an
appropriate
structure but, more than that, it must also be empowered. Those who have
replaced the battery in a car or motorcycle generally know that it is not
enough to buy a new battery at the shop and replace the old one. For that
new battery to work, it must be properly charged.
Similarly, there are many words or combinations of words with the
appropriate structure of mantras - the right number of syllables and an
appropriate meaning. But that is not enough to qualify them as mantras.
Without being empowered by mahakaola - without the purashcarana of
mahakaola, they do not carry the power you require for raising your
kundalini from muladhara cakra to sahasrara cakra.
