Probably, but there are self-taught savants around as well, and
measurements of their brain functions suggests that consciously
controlled autism is how they do it.

If he was not "naturally" intended for enlightenment by this means, he
wouldn't have been placed on a world where it could happen. Not that it
necessarily can, of course.

Exactly. And anyway, science is natural. Why use difficult methods if
easy ones are available? Perhaps we are all meant to fly - if we can
make our own wings.
