I'm sorry to hear that it has been expressed so poorly. The lineage of
transmission was indeed designed to protect people, as stated in my earlier
post. I, personally, have never encountered someone going around saying "I
know such and such, but I can't/won't share it with you." Of course, it is
not a good thing to lie and so, if pressed, you may find a monk or lay yogi
admitting to having certain knowledge but declining to discuss it for various
reasons.

Well, that's a different tradition. There are people writing of and sharing
what were once considered esoteric Buddhist secrets. The information is "out
there." But if you ask someone to break the rules of their tradition, to
disrespect what they hold intimately valuable, I doubt you find much.
