I knew it! My first name Wim is short for the same German Willhelm,
Wilhelmus in Latin, Guillaume in French, Gulielmo (sp?) in Italian, William
in English, Liam in Irish(?).

'Will' has the same meaning as well-being, happiness, joy. Julius as in
Julius Caesar same meaning. People of *goodwill*, welcome, well-being. Wille
also means peace.
Helm comes from the meaning helm of a ship, helmsman, gubernator. Helm also
means protector, protection as in helmet.
So a Willhelm is a person who has been given the task of leading a ship
through rough uncharted waters to a place of peace, joy and well-being.
Originally such a person only had to look for obstructions ahead of the
ship, there were no lighthouses yet.
It became a favourite name for kings, emperors, and noble ppl. It is a good
sign that England's second in line for the throne has the name 'William'.
Make sure those English really get your last name right otherwise it would
mean the opposite of you first name and you cancel yourself out. We would
not want that would we?
