But for many the only reason that they survived was remembering that depite
the nazi camp they still had themselves...Weisel wrote a whole book about
that. thats the only reason i brought it up...it was the ultimate test
against ur ego

Interesting.. I haven't read the book. But I wonder if there isn't a
difference between the feeling of 'still having yourself' and the feeling of
ego. From what people I've known who went through the camps have said got
them through the experience, it seems (to me) that it corresponds more to a
feeling that, when all external things are stripped away, you are still
connected to God, still human, and that that never depended on the external
things as much as you thought.
Mind you, that's my interpretation based on the words of people who never
talked much anyway, bless 'em, and certainly wouldn't use words like 'ego'
or 'humanity' to start off with...

Still, I have a really strong feeling that the 'ego' yogis and meditators
want to get rid of is not at all the same thing as that...
