I think we develop self-consciousness as kids, when we need to monitor
our own behaviour to survive in a world of powerful adults that we don't
understand.
By the time we're adults ourselves, or even teenagers, we've forgotten
that the self-consciousness was just a survival tactic and have adopted
it as a habit - hence it has become unconscious and automatic. That
makes it hard to fix, since we have no awareness of where it is coming
from.
