That is part of what started it all off with me. For those who don't
know, Godel produced a mathematical proof that any number system (e.g.,
1, 2, 3... including the rules of arithmetic) can be used to produce
mathematical statements that can neither be proved nor disproved within
that system. This shows that it is impossible to prove the consistency
of the system within the system itself.

Now, because we use mathematics to describe rigorously the way the
Universe operates, people speculatively extend this idea to apply to the
world at large: that there is no way to consistently understand all
truths about reality; and that the human mind cannot be a mechanical
deterministic system because any theory which states that it is must be
mathematically inconsistent. Personally, I accept the first and not the
second of these.
