I wouldn't say that compassion is unrealistic. I think that a genuine
appreciation of the way the world works would include such attitudes.
After all, from an evolutionary standpoint, I doubt that we would have
the capacity for compassion if it didn't work all that well.

But anyway, this is an example of what I mean. When I wrote my
statement, I wasn't thinking of things like compassion - yet someone
else has added another dimension to the discussion. This is an example
of why we need to respect other people's views and avoid dogmatism and
dogmatic writing, in my opinion.

Now, this *might* be unrealistic utopianism! Having said that, I suspect
that social evolution towards a better society is in fact happening,
facilitated by technology. The problem with it is that, as it seems to
me, social evolution or the state of society seems to be largely
determined by the state of the lowest common denominator. As we help the
worst scumbags in our world to develop their compassion, so we are.
