Hi Annushka,
You mean....you mean....MY MOTHER WAS WRONGGGG?????
Oh, I think it's also a generation thing. I'm in
my 50's, which makes my mother in her middle 80's. That's
how she was raised back then. I remember her mother being
even more strict about not using the body as a help
to the vocabulary.
You know, it was also a time when everyone wore hats!
That kind of thing.
And of course, I didn't mean that EVERY Russian
in the History of Russia did this. It's just
that it was a part of the culture. There's some good
reading
material about it, too. That is, about different cultures
and body language.
Now about that body wrapping and the cold: I come
from Northern Ontario (my paternal grandmother was Ojibwe
Indian). The Ojibwe's did a lot of body wrapping with
their infants, too, but not because of the cold (although
when I was born it was normally, 40 degrees F. BELOW zero!).
It was also to make sure the baby learned early to control
their body. And yes, in both cases (Russian and Ojibwe),
it only lasted for the first months of an infant's life.
still.....it was a different way of doing things.
And it surely affected the baby when it
became an adult. And for the GOOD. it conserves energy!
Lots of love,
adele alexandra
