It has been scientifically confirmed that mtDNA comes from the female
line only; however Christopher seems to believe that it stores memories
and passes these on to offspring as well, which is definitely contrary
to scientific opinion: the inheritance of *acquired* characteristics has
long been shown to be false (presumably with good scientific reason - it
used to be controversial, when Lamarck's theory opposed Darwin's, a
century ago). All that is inherited, it seems, are *original*
characteristics, plus accidental mutations.
Having said that, the function of much of the coding in the mtDNA is
something of a mystery at present. However, to jump from that to
presuming its function is not really justified by the evidence (which is
seriously lacking). There are also cases of people adapting over the
course of about three generations to living at high altitude (thicker
blood to carry the oxygen better); I don't know how that is explained
without the inheritance of acquired characteristics. Perhaps someone
reading this does!
