Subject: [K-list] Codons ... Martin Thompson
From: Christopher Wynter
On 1999/08/09 14:33, Christopher Wynter posted thus to the K-list:
Codons are three-nucleotide sequences on the mRNA. In this manner the amino
acids are organized
into the correct sequence to build a protein. The ribosome works with the mRNA
and tRNA to hook the
amino acids together to form a protein.
The genetic code
<http://pegasus.uthct.edu/ResUTHCT/Investigators/SBlack/geneticd.html> is the
alphabet of the genes. Genes are words <http://darwin.cshl.org/> written using
the four letters of
that alphabet, A, C, G, and T <http://www.mblab.gla.ac.uk/dictionary/>. And the
words, the genes
themselves code for proteins <http://www.mblab.gla.ac.uk/dictionary/> made of
their building brick,
the amino acids <http://www.mblab.gla.ac.uk/dictionary/>. A combination of three
letters, e.g. ATG,
are the code for a certain building brick, or amino acid. Each combination of
such three letters is
called a codon <http://www.gdb.org/Dan/DOE/prim6.html>. Each codon specifies an
amino acid.
With respect ...
