Gopal,
Apparantly, not all the gods prefer celibacy, or at least not all the time.
What about Shiva and Parvati? Didn't they live together as husband and wive?
Or what about Krishna and Radha? Or Krishna and the gopis?
A lot has been written on the topic of celibacy. Some schools of thought
promote strict celibacy and others promote the exact opposite. Who is right?
Personally, I believe that both ways are valid and that it is up to the
individual which way to choose, depending on the person's nature. In some
people sexual urges are much stronger than in other's and I believe that
people should always go with a path that suits their nature. That's why
people came up with different paths in the first place, because people's
nature does vary to some extent. However, in the end both paths may lead to
the same result.
On a personal level, being non celibate doesn't seem to have any negative
effects on my development. So far I never felt any inclination to become
celibate or to look at sexuality as something base and negative that should
be overcome.
