Dear Nancy,
As a fellow backache sufferer I spent some time doing my homework to find
out what might cause them. Apart from the obvious reason like injury, stress
etc. some people have been theorizing that there might be a psychological
reason as well why certain people are suffering from certain conditions.
One of these people is a woman named Louise Hay. In her book You Can Heal
Your Life, which I own in a german translation she mentions the back as
symbol of support in one's life. She differentiates between the different
areas of the back. Pain in the lower back might be connected to worries
about money, lack of financial support. Pain in the middle of the back may
stand for feelings of guilt, carrying around unsolved issues. Pain in the
upper back might be caused by lack of emotional support, feeling unloved,
holding back love oneself. Does anything sound familiar?
As for myself, my pain is located under the left shoulder blade and doctors
as well as chiropracters and acupuncturists are having a hard time with me.
Have been suffering from pain in the upper back and around the neck area,
which when acute will usually result in a heavy migraine, since 1986 and
have tried various treatments. Results: mostly negative. Acupuncture gave me
at least temporary relief. Not even the practise of Hatha Yoga as well as
martial arts have made the symptoms disappear for good, although sometimes I
manage to reverse the symptoms by doing certain exercises.
Personally, I believe that mind and body are strongly connected and that
certain thought patterns can cause certain conditions in the human body as I
can tell from my own experience.
