Ideally, meditation is to be without thoughts. This isn't possible; at best
one can stop the flow of thoughts temporarily. What remains is passive
meditation, where one observes thoughts and emotions, watches their rising
and subsiding but doesn't engage in any of them. Even the so called
"brilliant idea" is to be left for what it is - just a couple of passing
thoughts. By non-intervention with thoughts, one becomes detached from them;
this is the 'cooling down'.
Contemplation is having thoughts on a specific issue; thoughts on other
issues are excluded.
