Below is from a letter I wrote to another group about five weeks ago. I'm
sending it to the k list, because I think it fits into the 'spirit' of this
thread. The letter has to do with discernment and determining what is our
inner voice and what is ego.

Channeling our inner voice or higher self is a valid form of energy work.
The fear connected with the idea of channeling seems to be concerned with
the idea of a dark force entering the channeler...a false voice that might
mislead or even possess the unwary channeler.
So...let's talk about that.
First, there are many forms of channeling:
When you are involved in creative work you often, perhaps usually,
channel---and, as a general rule, the higher the quality of that work, the
more profound the channeling. We call that type of channeling inspiration.
When you suddenly receive a feeling that you need to veer in traffic to
avoid an accident, that's channeling too. We call that intuition...or
sometimes we think of it as help from a guardian angel.
When we hear that 'still small voice' inside that's channeling. We call it
conscience.
When we suddenly get a flash about a future event which comes to pass,
that's channeling. We call it clairvoyance or precognition.
When we suddenly know the thoughts of another, or when we know who is on the
phone before we answer, that's channeling too. We call it ESP.
I could go on and on here, but you get the idea. And the idea, of course,
is that we constantly channel. We do it automatically. We receive
information continually throughout each day and night. The idea of the
channeling exercise is to give us insight---and, yes, a bit of conscious
control---over the tide of information that washes through us. The way we
do that is through focus. The idea of the exercise is to enable us to
discriminate between what is truly helpful and which comes from higher self
and what is not helpful and which comes from fear, ignorance, or ego, and
which reinforces belief in evil or dark forces.
Now there are other forms of channeling as well, and these are not helpful
except when they act as a mirror for our fears, doubts, and insecurities so
that we can learn from them. We do this type of channeling automatically,
too.
Some of you know the type of negative channeling I'm talking about---the
sudden rush of terror, the overwhelming anxiety, the feeling that evil or
darkness is lurking and ready to move in and take over at the slightest
relaxation of vigilance. I believe, and strongly, that this is the voice of
ego speaking from fear and ignorance.
At this point, it is reasonable for you to ask where I am coming from. I
will try to tell you as briefly as I can. I have channeled for most of my
life. For the most part, I channel an aspect of my higher self who calls
himself Tomm. I believe Tomm is a true channel.
So...what does that mean? What is a true channel? A true channel is your
inner voice. A true channel speaks with the energy of love. Your inner
voice will never belittle you or attack you. It guides, but it never
forces. It gives perspective and objectivity to your concerns. It will not
tell you what to do; instead it gives you the tools to make those decisions
yourself.
Many years ago, I did channeling on the Ouija board, but I don't do that
anymore. Why? Not because I believe that there is 'evil' or 'magick'
connected with the board. It is only wood and paper. The Ouija is no more
than a focus. I used it alone and I always began each session with a prayer
calling on only the highest and best. But I abandoned the board for two
reasons: first, it is a crutch...if our leg ain't broke, we don't need
crutches. :-) The second reason is far more important, I think, and that
is that Ouija boards are sold as _games_. Approaching channeling as a
game, is unwise, I believe. When channeling is turned into a parlor game
by people who want their fortunes told, then what I term 'earth-bound
spirits' often approach. And why does this happen? Because discrimination
is not used. The participants in this 'game' are often 'open channels,' and
begin to receive from all sources. At this point, if the participant
operates from fear, then he/she will attract the fearful.
But it doesn't take a Ouija board to create an open channel. Kundalini can
do it. K can and does do this, because k increases our sensitivity to every
nuance. K doesn't _create_ this stuff; it simply makes us more aware of
what is already there.
I do not believe in evil, but I believe in the belief of evil. That bears
explaining. We all believe in separation to a certain extent. If we
didn't, we wouldn't be living in a body. We probably all have a belief in
Oneness or unity, but we often place that in some distant future and don't
_really_ think we are One just yet.
We have an effective tool which keeps us focused in physical reality. We
came equipped with it. It is a tool which repeatedly attempts to
demonstrate our separation from the whole. It is called ego...and ego is
interested in maintaining the status quo. That's its job. And we should be
thankful for ego, because without it, we would not be able to function in
this world. Without ego, we would not be able to tell our thoughts and
memories from 'others' thoughts and memories. And those of you who
faithfully read the k list can undoubtedly find examples of people who
temporarily lost their ego functioning and are close to a breakdown.
So...ego is helpful, but ego often narrows its focus to the point where it
compartmentalizes self from self. And self from Self.
Ego seems to operate much like an idiot savant. It is brilliant in limited
areas, yet it can be incredibly stupid in others. Ego often speaks from
fear. And ego excels at projecting this fear and mirroring it back to us.
Often those projections take the form of darkness and evil. I believe they
are illusion. But our lives are also illusion and so we must deal with
these things as if they are real, just as we deal with our day to day lives.
Now, let me talk for a minute about protection and about the specific
channeling exercise we did. It had two parts.
The first part of the exercise gave you the image of a lotus in a pond. Why
this particular image? The lotus is an ancient symbol of the sacred. The
water is a symbol of the unconscious. The roots of the lotus are a
visualization designed to ground us, to keep us firmly rooted so that we
don't 'float' away. And the blossom of this lotus is raised above the water
to the sky where it receives and draws in the light from above---the light
of our higher self. This first part then, encourages a focus on the higher
self...and the image of the light offers protection.
The second part of the exercise gave you the image of a radio. A radio is a
receiver. The dial and the volume controls on this radio are the tools
which allow you discrimination. With the focus being on higher self, the
radio acts as a tool to tune OUT the distracting voices that buffet us
continually. It allows you to tune OUT, for a time, the voice of ego and
listen, instead, to your inner voice---your higher self which always has
your best interest at heart.
We are multidimensional beings. We are far more than we believe we are.
