If you think about it (hmmmmmmm), if reincarnation is true, then those people
are right, in a sense. Some say that being here on earth is hell. Some say
heaven. (and then there is the majority of us that feels it's a little of
both - Hell is a motel we've all been to at one time or another).
Upon death, when one *thinks* you will come back (from fear of course), then
you will, whether you believe in it or not, fundamentalist or mystic...
because you are in a state of fear. This takes you to the lower Bardo states.
This is most likely where the fear of reincarnation came in, and the 'doomed
to hell' for *thinking* about it.
Whether this is true or not, I don't know -- it was just my experience of
peeking at death's door.
