Health Poll 2

Since we have at least three people on the list who have Graves disease, which would make it statistically more prevalent on this list then in the general population, I thought I would do a rather serious Poll to see if there is a correlation between K and various illnesses. Some people especially seem to think there may be a correlation between K activity and CFS and Fibromyalgia. On the other hand, there is also anecdotal evidence that K makes one *healthier.* :))

Question:

Do you consider yourself unusually healthy for your age?

Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?

Was this before or after K awakening (if applicable)?

Do you meditate?

Please reply privately to me if you want your response to be absolutely confidential.

Thanks everyone! I would love it if we could get a large response to make the poll more meaningful.

38 people responded to the poll or on health issues.

Despite the fact that those who are in ill health are probably more inclined to respond, there was a pretty even number of healthy vs unhealthy respondents.

Some statistics:

There are about 777 members of the k list

CFS is present in at least .2% (.002) of the US population. (Some say .2 to 2.0 and up to 4%)
At least 7 people on the list have CFS (.0090) which is a little less than 1% So this is very high--over 4 times the norm if the norm is .2%, but within range if the norm turns out to be 1% or higher.
FMS (Fibromyalgia) is present in at least 2% of the US population (some say 2-10%)
At least 6 people on the list have Fibromyalgia (.0077) which is less than 1/2 of one percent. So this is actually much lower than the norm.
Graves disease is present in 1/4 of 1% of the US population (.0025) At least 4 people on the list have graves disease which .005 of the K list population--about double the normal rate.

The letters which started the poll:

It is now nearly six years since my Kundalini rose spontaneously. It is only now that I am experiencing some 'serious' disturbances in my body. Metabolism has suddenly gone completely out of whack. Shortness of breath, ( I am thin and otherwise in excellent shape), endocrine system is suddenly on 'hyper' mode. Cardiologists and Endocrinologist still scratching their heads because of my 'unusual' tests results....as well of course the episode I told the K List about....tightness in chest and complete paralysis from toe to head after an impact of vibrational energy hit me while driving my car.

I now have muscle fatigue that is often completely unbearable, although that part started after my son was born...it still feels related ...Cardiologist actually advised my GP that the whole thing looks like Fibro Myalgia...etc. You too mentioned the Fibro M aspect. Another friend of mine who's K is definitely awakening with a vengence as well as the whole Chronic Fatigue / FM thing going on. I would be interested in knowing if this is a common 'symptom' of K awakening for people. ANYBODY???

So if anyone knows of K and fibromyalgia / muscle fatigue I'ld appreciate the info.

Thanks!

I fell terribly ill very suddenly - literally over the weekend -- in ways very similar to El Collie's story of K awakening. Eleven doctors could not figure it out. Told me CFS/Fibromyalgia.
This was 2 years ago; I became ill, coincidentally, during the week of the solar eclipse in August 1999. I have always wondered if that had anything to do with what happened. A year ago I came across El's story, about the time that the spiritual part was kicking in for me, and realized that this was what was happening to me. I am generally better now, health-wise, with the occasional relapse. I have come to accept daily fatigue and other physical symptoms as part of this profound process.

******

Thought I would take a few minutes to share my experience of Graves disease.
I was diagnosed in August 2000 to the surprise of both my doctor and myself as we were expecting a diagnosis of hypothyroidism to come back in the initial lab reports.

see http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Kundalini-Gateway/message/11718

My 'out of wack' K has settled down and for awhile I thought it had disappeared completely but what has emerged instead is a deeper awareness, a deeper knowing, a deeper understanding, a deeper connection with my K-energy, a deeper intuitive connection and a deeper, richer and more fully sensuous sense of self.

********

I had CFS for years and was recently put on a thyroid drug.

********

I have Graves disease (it is normally hereditary) The medication is very effective and regular blood checks are useful. Now the causes . . .
(not yet fully understood)
Stress is probably a contender.
Cure - well it can go and the thyroxin levels decrease as we get older - so we may be quite active as we get older (relatively). I found chi kung took the edge off it.
I also found it useful to measure the pulse as an indicator of levels (you can put these in a spreadsheet and graph it)
'Excess fire' gives you a clue to its causation (in you) and the means of being at ease with yourself.

**********
Very active, very healthy. At 40, just starting to show signs of high bp. This is predictable; very wild and challenging (and FUN) job, wife fighting multiple degrading illnesses, just finished grad school, blah blah blah. Perceive life as an incredible gift - sometimes the present makes me smile, sometimes it makes me say, "Hmmm", always appropriate.

>> Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?
at 21, food poisoning set off arthritis, appendicitis, and lower intestinal stuff. Had NDE post-op in hospital. This is what sent me into the K-spin. Bronchial issues in 20s, nothing until current hypertension stuff.

Oh, yeah. Until 38, fought back problems. Had mid-life crisis, started exercising for first time in life. back probs gone. Go figger.

>>Was this before or after K awakening (if applicable)?
See above. My awakening came after someone popped into my life and showed me bahkti yoga and kashmir shaivism. 2.5 years of work, gentle, beautiful birth (in middle of taking 19 credits/semester by day, working 8 hrs by night - hehe).

>>Do you meditate?
See above. Haven't sat in months, but after centering, firmly planted and able to merge into life. It's always there...

***********
I just had a checkup (November) to make sure because I was feeling severe heart pains on and off and could not tell if they were a sign of clinical illness or k-related symptoms. My test resul were those of a very young person with one exception. My blood pressure is very low, ...
My doctor said whatever I was doing, to keep doing it. I do have trouble with not feeling things on my skin--a very common side effect of k fire. This numbness has been around, progressively since I turned 19. It fluctuates with stress.

**********
I will answer about my insomnia, waking up many times during the night.
Sometimes with the need of eating something sweet.
And the awful headaches for 5 years, at the beginning.
now they have stopped.
That would be the only change in my life after awakening.

********
At the time I became aware of many things (K?) I had a terrible rash on my chest, and my eyes were red and itching. I was treated by a Doctor, who is also a professor of homeopathy and an expert in chinese medicine, and he could not do anything for me. He said that rash, itching, allergy, etc., can be a sign of an over active immune system, so maybe I fighting something.

No, as far as it concerns my body, it seems it's going from bad to worse.

Don't know.

It made me a whole lot healthier. I used to get colds and flu all winter... now sometimes I will feel a little odd for a day or two as my body makes antibodies, but that is it.
Thinking... I am not sure if the improved health is a side effect of K. or my Shamanic awakening. I have always been awakened, but I have been a Shaman since 1993, and it is since then that I have had a gradual improvement in my health.

>Question:
>
>Do you consider yourself unusually healthy for your age?

Sure!

>Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?

I used to have excema, but it rarely shows up anymore. I have a lot of allergies, but I consider them a side effect of being a sensitive being and have learned to handle them.

>Was this before or after K awakening (if applicable)?
n/a
>Do you meditate?

In my own way. Getting grounded and talking to the heart voice. Getting grounded and surrendering any place of tension I feel. Observing the conversation between mind and body. Noticing how the thoughts affect the body and surrendering any place that twitches or tenses up in response to my thoughts. Keeping my energy clear and flowing is essential to maintaining my immune system.

**********
I am the same way, i rarely get sick, i don't believe i have an awakened Kundalini(although as with everything, everyone has it - to a certain extent), pretty sure i've tapped it's power a few times for a period of time... i believe that because of meditation, i've grown more sensitive to my body, and allow it to fight the sickness, (some sicknesses are an expression imof the body, so sometimes help it manifest, to get its job done, and out of the way) and help it along, however subtley it may be, and it's probably unconscious, but the desire and the sensitivity, i think is all you really need, to allow your body to heal itself, and not get in the way, thats one of the main things of kunalini isn't it? to clear all obstructions, to allow the power of god/tao to flow through?...

***********
In general yes, very healthy.
>
> Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?

Not diagnosed but a week or so before my first recognisable K manifestation I had heart palpitations so severe that I almost went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. Then when K first errupted I had back ache for a few weeks, since then I've felt constant vibrabrions moving around in my body, my doc sent me off to a neurologist who gave me the usual tests, MRI etc and he said he couldn't find anything up. And my eyesight has actually improved.

********
I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

I became ill approx nine months before my awakening.

********
Depends on who you compare it too - physically I am quite healthy at 39, apart from weak intestines as a result of too many amoebes and bacteria on my travels and probably most of all too much antibiotics at that time, - and hayfever. Having severe moodswings - manic episodes and being very vulnerable to stress and other peoples emotional problems is a different story. That's why I am here on this list anyway!

*********
> Do you consider yourself unusually healthy for your age?

NO.still young, can't see the difference.

> Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?

NO.

*******
> Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?
yes. I had been having extreme physical challenges for the last couple of years but recently have been able to break free and am rejuvenating myself.
>
> Was this before or after K awakening (if applicable)?
before for the illnesses. the physical challenges came after. I think the k awakening made me more acutely aware of the energetic emotional connections with the physical problems. Was k involved in the challenges? Yes, but I don't think it precipitated them or aggravated them. I do think k has enhanced my recuperative abilities. I learned how to be compassionate towards myself in these challenges which made me more compassionate to those around me. The challenges were severe enough that I actually understood how people could choose death over life because of pain.
***********
>Do you consider yourself unusually healthy for your age?

No, I suffer from IBS - irritable bowl Syndrome that started with the on-set of K. IBS is a generic term used my western doctors because they have no clue as to what it is.. diet, genetics, stress, etc.. It can be very very painful and debilitating - I do not suffer as many attacks ( I did during my "dark night" time), but can leave me in bed for two to three days and I have been in the ER at least twice because of serious conditions - dehydrated, extreme pain, vomiting.

Also at this time I started to get skin rashes, allergies - never had that any time in my life before K
>
>Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?
IBS (above), exima (sp?), have had strange growths removed from my body that they had no idea what they were and are part of some lab book now...:)
LOL
>
>Was this before or after K awakening (if applicable)?

After K
>
>Do you meditate?
Yes - I do deep (ki) breathing every day - since my stomach illness / anxiety : ),, I have changed my diet and that has helped..

Meditating helps as well.

but overall thank god for Reiki for pain relief!!

*********
Physically, yes. Apart from heavy colds and dodgy sinuses, have had various minor mysterious conditions that come and go, and that have flummoxed the docs, but that I now know to be common physical manifestations of K.

> Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?

Recurrent depression, though I don't consider it an illness anymore.

> Was this before or after K awakening (if applicable)?

Began at the same time. Flip side of the coin.

> Do you meditate?

No. Never have apart from a bit of TM just before K awakened.

********
I don't really know if I have gone through the full-blown K yet, but I've been always healthy, and consider myself to still be healthy. I meditate and sometimes reach trance for short periods of time, but that is a recent thing for me.

Nope!
( although as a kid I was the fastest girl in my elementary school, and was the only girl in my gym class to be able to climb the ropes to the roof, and achieve other awards of excellence physically.
...until they put me in a back brace due to scoliosis. )
Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?
Yep.
Scoliosis as a child. ( 10 yrs old)...6 years of emotional and physical hell with plaster body casts and eventual spinal surgery to fuse 7 vertebrae together. ( although scoliosis was apparantly minor.)
Spine trying to immitate a snake...hmmmm?????
Upon first ( more minor awakening in 1989'ish ) system went bezerk,...doctors ready to diagnose Lupus...until things settled down. Found Mitral Valve Prolapse in heart at that time as well.
Major awakening Jan 16, 1996
2002 , latest venture is Graves Disease. ( although cardiologist was highly suspect of fibromyalgia due to severe muscle pain going on thoughout my system.)

*********
It depends how you define healthy..... I was told by a healer when i was 18 that the energy i'm manifesting is too strong for my body. It would be like running a plane engine in a little car..... I learned how to handle this discrepancy. Most of my organs and the nerve system can get crazy at times, but i'm in tune with my system quite well by now ( i studied natural medicine) and i'm able to live with it and balance it.

doctors are helpless when it comes to my body. They might get " normal" results, or they might get results that are totally off...

*********
Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Depression

Was this before or after K awakening (if applicable)?
I first became ill three months after a "second" K event,(the first K event occurred three months before the second, but I experienced no ill effets inbetween the two). Prior to that I was in very good physical condition, with good health. In my mind, the "jury" is still out regarding a direct cause and effect relationship with my illness, and K. if there is a realtionship, it is unclear to me as to which is influencing which, positively, or negatively.

Do you meditate?
Yes, and have done so since 1991.

*********
> >Do you consider yourself unusually healthy for your age?
No, l am permanently disabled with Charcot arthropathy.

*********
No, not in the normal way. But what is health. I'm 42, and I see many peoply, younger and older who are vast asleep, maybe there are not ill in the traditional way, but I don't see many live in them. Of course, I can only judge my life, which I am happy about, thanks to K, and many, many other processes wandering and wondering around
*********

I am MUCH healthier now than I was 8 years ago (when I was sick). Cancer did leave me with a few reminders it was here, but otherwise I am fine. Considering what I went through, yes...I feel I am very healthy. And K definitely had a hand in my healing. Of that I am sure.

Did K have a hand in my illness? I wonder. Part of my illness was definitely aggravated by my emotional and spiritual imbalances, of which I had many. I consider myself K-awake since birth, though the K was more active in some periods of my life than others (which appears to be a normal phenomenon as well). K did push me along in many respects, and no question some of it was well before I was ready (adolsescence was *hell*).

********
> Do you consider yourself unusually healthy for your age?

no... i am chronically ill...

> Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?

i have late stage lyme disease, which can happen when lyme disease is left untreated for several years... it can take a variety of forms, but for me is a painful neurological disorder that escalates dramatically if spend much time upright, including sitting up (except in a recliner)...

> Was this before or after K awakening (if applicable)?

after... many years after... although it coincided with a refocus on meditation and inner life after a 10 year dormant period...

> Do you meditate?

yes, but the forms and frequency vary greatly at different times in my life...

> Thanks everyone! I would love it if we could get a large response to

i think the results might be skewed by more ill people responding than healthy folks... so i suggest that healthy folks please also take a moment to respond...

********

I am healthy.

Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?

Cervical Somatic Dysfunction
Facets Disease

Was this before or after K awakening (if applicable)?

Before. I had years, at least 10 years, of pain, treatments and learning to "let go". I had to close my very successful 10 year Skincare Practice; let go of long time personal relationships that were damaging to me; sit on the couch or lay on the floor with heat and ice; take many different medications; explore various healing techniques both traditional and alternative. I also spent a lot of time crying and being depressed about the whole thing.

When K became active, and Shakti began moving through my body it began healing me. The energy moves me in unbelievable ways. Some times I felt like my head was turning 360 degrees. I have been twisted and turned every which way. At first this freighted me, but I have learned to completely trust whatever is happening, no matter how much it hurts at the time it is taking place. Every muscle has been stretched, all the bones in my neck and back have been popped. K has been like an MRI going through my body releasing all the built up tension, all the twisted places where I have been blocked. I am more agile than I have been in years. K sometimes lays me down flat on the floor while sitting crossed legged on my meditation mat. The power of the energy holds me wherever it wants me to be. I SIMPLY
SURRENDER.

Do you meditate?

YES!!!!!! I spend at least an hour every day letting the K energy move my body. I surrender to the movements that are directed by Divine Wisdom. I am healed. I have been well since K awakening. I do however HAVE TO spend the time on my meditation mat or else I start hurting again. Some times if I travel it is difficult to find the time or the place. I am very sensitive to energies and have become more empathic so I have learned to be careful about where I open up to energies. When I do not meditate, I start hurting again. I have even had my neck go out, but have been able to get it realigned by sitting in meditation I have had no outside treatment for the past 14 months since my K became active, which is a miracle considering the previous 10 years where I was constantly under some Doctor's care or taking some pain medication.

I am eternally grateful to Mystress for all her guidance.

nope. age:37 & am unusually ill.

yep. Pulmonary Sarcoidosis. Although, from recent tests, it shows the sarc is in remission, but I'm still dealing with shortness of breath and mucus from hell. ;)

N/A. I consider myself always K awakened. However, I recently closed down all my life force energy in preparation to die, and then decided to stay, so I have been doing work with MAS to get my energy going again. Pretty weird huh? :) So, I felt the snakes awaken again, and my health has been improving since then. But I know I was always awakened. so, I guess I would count as as a yes and a no? smile

> Do you consider yourself unusually healthy for your age?

Somewhat.

> Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?

Yes, prostate cancer and hepatitis C.

> Was this before or after K awakening (if applicable)?

Learning of the hepatitis was definitely part of the majorlife crisis (at the time) that I now see as leading to my awakening. Being diagnosed with cancer *after* my spiritual experience as taken the "crisis" out of the situation. It's like two blessings inside two illnesses.

> Do you meditate?

No.I'm too squirelly to sit down for extended periodsof time. And this world is so beautiful, I'm afraid I might miss something if I close my eyes too long. But with my condition, I feel it's time to start meditating again.

*********
This Poll about the health problems of people acknowledging their active K is intriguing enough to delurk me. My name is Mike, and I've gotten so much out of all the responses here. I think this topic is as important as it is interesting. And I have my own hunches and theories about the way our health is affected by living in awareness.
I did have a nice, life changing awareness find me when I was 16, but since then, it has been coupled with years of IBS, depression/anxiety, chronic fatigue, headaches, and ADD. My shift in perspective to see things from a spiritual perspective kind of evolved even though I wasn't often feeling very well. And being reminded (thank you alot Mystress Angelique) to see the perfection in things as they are made me wonder if so many of these "modern ailments" weren't just Goddess working through me. Being exhausted, being in pain just often enough keeps me from "getting in the game" and burying my head in the sand the way that happy ingnorance can let you. So I am FORCED to spend hours pondering the why's of all this, and sometimes....the veil is lifted just a little and the lessons and the bliss come streaming through.
My whacky attention span will probably always prevent me from ever having a serious career because I usually can't wrap my mind around something longer than a minute without drifting into the ether, but facing my dissapointment in that also brought me face to face with my ego, which is turning out to be a very interesting dance. And I think that's important work! It's been written here that some folks have a built in filter that keeps them from getting bogged down in "useless" information. I say AMEN to that.
The depression sometimes feels like huge weight, an all- encompassing nothingness, but in retrospect I feel like I was being stretched wider...ha!...by misery! More room for the good stuff! Anxiety crackles through me like electrical fire and I imagine it as karmic lava shooting up through me, igniting all the crap from this exisitance on it's way out. That (and this wonderful list) taught me to seek refuge in the Witness state and just let it go on it's way home. Oh, yeah, I still freak out at the time....my hindsight is killer though. But that taught me something else, too: forgiveness.
The exhaustion and tummy aches are still lessons waiting to be learned, but while lying there too tired to move, my mind travels to places so far away that I've learned that it's all inside me anyway. I used to do more sitting meditation, but what was going on was the gunk was being brought up faster than usual and I was often not able to release it. Then I'm stuck with it in my head, and that's just not pleasant enough to make me want to jump back into it. I admit, I'm afraid to meditate! But at exactly the right time, yoga came along with her pretty face and kissed me. Those ultra-cool ancient yogis sooo had my number! The physical practice has become a sort of moving meditation for me.
I've never had anything serious like cancer to deal with, but i hope that if I do get that hand dealt to me that I will see that, too, from the perspective that it's all just lessons to be learned. And I wish strength and dignity to those who are going through those sorts of things. Thanks to everyone for a great list

No, but I am healthy as far as I know.

>Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)? Was this before or after K awakening (if applicable)?

Nothing chronic. There have been strange disorders...
and usually the cure has been to have a look at my attitudes. The physical system seems to be quite sensitive but I have learned to live with it. Since fireworks started in 1998 I remember having one cold and a minor discus prolapse.

Do you consider yourself unusually healthy for your age?
- Yes, but then dunno if it's the K or just my age. I'm 26 btw.

Have you been diagnosed with any illness(es)?
- When I was a around 12, I got chronic headaches, did EEG scan (or something like that, with bright lights & plugs), that doctor determined that I was slightly 'mental'.
My most vivid recollection is that the smile on the doctor's face telling me it's ok without any prescriptioned medication whatsoever, stating that this haunting daily pain is just a normal incurable case which needs not be afraid of! (not to mention an old chinese remedy for headache that a family friend gave that involves eating pig's brain. i live in south east asia. . .go figure . . .) But it just dissapears without a trace about a year later. Started meditating around 14 y.old, buddhism has a great influence, started a vegetarian way of life. But those are ill days, dunno if mal-nutrition is the word, but a lot of feverish days, and heat. Sweaty hot feverish sleep, drifting in and out of dreams. Had a lot of those, with lucid dreams with intense colored tunnel. But nothing extraordinary. It all just passed.

Was this before or after K awakening (if applicable)?
- Don't know exactly, big possibility it's before.

Do you meditate?
- Yes, just re-started after a big hole period. And reiki initiated, which I think helps a lot.
