Rick,

I have an early morning scheme that really wakes me up before doing my
meditations:

1. Cold shower (real cold to make it work) + rub dry/warm
2. Yoga set for a flexible spine, stretches and pranayama (20 - 30 minutes)
3. Have a short rest (5 - 10 minutes) to integrate 2
4. Meditations

No matter how tired I feel before I get up, after 1 & 2 I feel balanced,
silent in my mind and awake. The only challenge is to get out of my bed. If
I realy feel tired when I get up, or during the day, I try to go to sleep
earlier the following night. And when this does not help, I take a day off
and get a good rest.
