Hello Hillary you make some very interesting points.
I agree with you, that if the mystic's experience of
gnosis transcends cultural boundaries, then I believe
we can conclude that it is "hard wired" into us.
However, I would not conclude that therefore it is
meaningless. After all there is pleasure in it, that
is why it is called bliss and ecstasy. There must be
a reason why it is bliss and ecstasy, because we are
going to want it. So, why not seek it out?

Kindest regards,

Jeff Brooks

Dear Jeff, List,

If we can agree that many if not most religions have
mystic states in common (and I think most of us who
have experienced these states naturally agree), and
these states can be divided into categories or levels,
then it seems to me that the mystic condition must
be part of the human condition--hard wired into the
brain as it were--and not something we "learn."

Is it then the sense that there are "levels" which
makes it logical to want to reach out as if there
were a goal? Or are these levels really just
different parts of the brain that are being activated,
with no real metaphysical conclusions to be had at
all?

Just mulling

Love, Hillary
