Are religious militants destined to the One? I've experienced 'paths' that
have left some followers in the deep depression, psychotic and suicidal.

I'd say the 'path' which one follows is inline with ego (to a degree).

If it didn't fit your ego then you would probably reject it.

A wanting aspect. Must be this colour and taste. Does it hold the peace I
'desire'.

Or does it terminate 'desire'.... Loose the path.

A trick is to replace the ego aspect with the divine (or something else)
that it is freed. Loose the self in some thing
else.

Eventually if the wiser part of self shines through enough there may be a
clarity (a loosing of non-clarity) of which way to act. It may also look
like there isn't any path, rather a continuous newness in each moment.
