I guess if you take a bunch of people off the street who have no natural
interest in spiritual discovery or progress and you ask them to engage in a
practice like this--yes you may get some undesirable results. The
"activation of chakras" mentioned in this study is as a result of the
internal fire homing in on where the attention is held.

If it's done (or overdone) in a mechanical way and the person isn't ready
for it, I guess you might see the results of stagnant astral material being
burned away too fast within the chakra or the channels leading to it. This
might manifest as toxicity or inflammation in the organ which is related to
the chakra.

I have a feeling that most people who have a natural urge towards
meditation or chakra development are also more prepared for it. I
personally have done a LOT of what they are describing, for over 20 years,
and on a daily basis. And I know others who have also. I've never seen
anything like the results this study purports to have discovered.

I guess it boils down to what degree "overuse of paranormal ability" is to
Motoyama. If I tried to raise a blister in the paint on the wall in front
me via telekinesis I think it would probably give me a headache. But it's
not something I'm at all interested in doing either (hint...moderation is
good).

Can you point us to where we all could read the details of this study?
