Greetings,

Lysebeth (Pranayama, The Yoga of Breathing) quotes a scientist in the
Research Institute for Scientific Yoga in Lonavla:

"In pranayama the changes in pressure are very important for anyone
anxious to understand the physiology of yoga exercises, which are aimed
at providing spiritual development. The yogic processes for awakening
the kundalini force are mainly influenced by two factors. They include
both extension of the vertebral column and its adjoining regions and
also enhanced blood supply to regions of the vertebral column, more
particularly the pelvic region and the loins. In pranayama (with
control of the abdominal wall) the extension of the vertebral column
occurs using manipulation of the contracted diaphragm, more particularly
by work on the two crura (tendons of the diaphragm).

After an inhale to the maximum extent, with the utmost contraction of
the diaphragm and in its lowest position it is thrust by the large
vertical group of muscles (in the center of the abdomen) back upward,
this in turn leading to a pressing force on the internal organs. The
tautened diaphragm exerts an opposite force by means of its two crura.
In this manner the vertebral column and its adjoining regions is
subjected to a continual traction force.

We can see that the high intraabdominal pressure in pranayama is also
responsible for the awakening of kundalini owing to the tractive force
of the two crura upward."
Regards, Richard
