The remark about throwing monkey wrenches is so very appropriate.
However the article by Joël Carbonnel
(http://www.positivehealth.com/permit/Articles/Regular/joel48.htm)
initially mentions two methods which are not genuine or are very extreme
(Buteyko breathing and re-birthing breathing). To my mind they are
strictly beyond the fold. At least they should be put in a different
category. Buteyko is a peculiar and dangerous form of breath holding
usually offered by opportunists without any proper background. The
practise might be considered very advanced pranayama if anything.
Usually however it is touted as a simple cure for asthma and almost any
condition involving hyperventilation irrespectively of whether this is
harmful or physiologically necessary as in some forms of diabetes.
Rebirthing leads to delusions due to prolonged hyperventilation.

Joël is surely in error when he says that the diaphragm has the
abdominal wall muscle as an antagonist. This would imply that one could
breathe diaphragmatically with no resistance in the throat and with the
mouth open, i. e. with the tongue and throat in the "say r" position for
the doc. It is not possible, because the diaphragm needs an antagonist
in the form of such resistance.

Otherwise Joël has many words of wisdom to say. Maybe however for many
there is no real alternative to trying to learn from a book or from an
incompetent instructor and a stage of messed up breathing is
inevitable. After years of this my personal principles are now emphasis
of true diaphragmatic breathing and physical exercise. Greetings to all,
Richard Friedel

I have recovered the breath from the diaphragm, and it gets better and better each day. I have gone too, through spontaneous movements where the breath regulates in differente patterns.
