Hi Rick -- a number of writers, most recently Jed McKenna (Spiritual Enlightenment, the Damndest Thing), make a clear distinction between self-realization and mystical experience. In fact, it is argued that lots of people get stuck on the path because they believe their mystical experiences represent enlightenment so they look no further. Self-realization may or may not be preceded by mystical experiences (e.g., kundalini). Thanks for your insightful post. Holly
