hi Chris,

yes, you bring up interesting issues in your 2 recent posts... while a path
of freeing myself to experience every pleasure that i wanted has mostly
worked well for me... i have danced close to the edge on many occasions, and
took many risks... it seems that i was somehow protected, and that can't be
said for everyone who has done this...

i don't have many of the answers, although i suspect that our early training
to turn simple pleasures for a two-year-old into taboos leads to some
overcompensation at the root of much serious risk-taking behavior... (for
example drug addiction and some unsafe sexual acts)...

> If I find alcohol and
>drugs pleasurable should I consume as much as possible to heighten my
>pleasure? If I have sex with as many people as possible without regard
>for relationship; not caring for the other then should I continue
>because it brings me pleasure?

>There is a huge difference between delighting in the experience of life,
>of taking pleasure in love and intimacy versus desiring and consuming
>pleasure to feed destructive addictions.

as i mentioned above, yes there is some difference... although for me, the
path to the other side of "desiring and consuming pleasure to feed
destructive addictions." was to go completely through them to the other
side... and i do not recommend this to others... each must take or avoid
their own risks... there are so many pleasures that are not dangerous
that one can focus on, so risky behavior is not often very necessary...

> Alright, I hear that. Please teach me about pursuing pleasure. Can
pleasure be phsyical, emotional and intellectual?

yes, of course... i would suggest that pleasure should be given one's full
attention as appreciation as it happens... it need not really be pursued...
life is fill of pleasure, as wll as pain...

> Is the pursuit of pleasure a hindrance to awakening or a tool of
awakening?

desire of awakening itself can be both "a hindrance to awakening" as well as
"a tool of awakening"...

> Surely awakened masters know pleasure - do they pursue it or does it
happen without attachment?

i am merely one of the world's great awakened master baiters, so you need to
ask the other kind of masters about that... *smiling*

> When is pleasure a distraction?

sometimes when you're driving, depending on the pleasure... ;-p

> Where is attachment to pleasure?

i don't know what to tell you about that...

> What if my pleasure hurts others, then is pleasure okay?

yes, find yourself a masochist... heheheheheh... but seriously, that is
something that each person must discern for themselves... i don't see one
general rule that applies to all situations in this regard...

>Your [Hillary's] point about Puritanism is fair, however, there seems to me
to be a
>difference between the pleasures of intimacy and K awakening on one hand
>and the endless pursuit of pleasure on the other. If I find alcohol and
>drugs pleasurable should I consume as much as possible to heighten my
>pleasure? If I have sex with as many people as possible without regard
>for relationship; not caring for the other then should I continue
>because it brings me pleasure?

>There is a huge difference between delighting in the experience of life,

these are good questions... i merely originally spoke up because the wording
of one of your posts seemed to denigrate worldly pleasure as something that
is empty... and i wanted to present another view of pleasure... but it is
true that complete unrestrained pursuit of pleasure may not always be a good
idea... although it has mostly worked out well for me... but your milage may
vary... so be responsible for your own actions, as you always are..

warmly,

percyval
