Any aspect of ourselves that is not disciplined looks toward the past or
future. The body remembers past delights and anticipates future ones, as
do the emotions and intellect. To look to the present requires
discipline. A lazy intellect does not serve anyone or anything but nor
does a lazy feeling world or a lazy body. In that context Ramana's
statement can read, "The undisciplined are undisciplined but the
disciplined use the intellect (also body experiences and feelings) as
tools to the realization of the Self." On this we agree.

Pursuing knowledge for the sake of knowledge is as empty as pursuing
sense pleasure for the sake of sense pleasure. I am not extolling the
virtues of undisciplined intellect anymore than I would recommend any
other undisciplined aspect of life. The problem with today's culture is
mental laziness. The schools teach remembering (fact consumption), not
investigating and certainly not thinking. Popular media dishes out
entertainment wrapped in certainty, not information with ambiguity.

One last point from an issue raised in an earlier posting on this
subject. Someone suggested that many in today's world pursue intellect
over feeling and I agree it appears that way. My experience of them is
quite the contrary. Most "intellectuals" are driven by their feelings
while claiming rationality - look to their irrational fears (example
Freud). Truly great intellectuals have a deep respect for their feelings
and for the world of spirit (examples Jung and Einstein).
