A similar idea is expressed in Yoga Sutras of Patanjali:

II.14 They have joy or sorrow for their fruit as their cause is virtue
or vice.

And also:

II.16 The pain which is yet to come can and should be avoided.

Clearly, present pain (and pleasure) is due to past karmas/actions.
