I thought anger was a function of the small I but maybe not. Shinzen Young
( meditation teacher) says that if you really pay close attention and
experience anger fully, then anger is like energy waves coursing through
your body and can actually be pleasant. But for me its about feeling
slighted and protecting the small I.

Hi Janet,

well, I'm sure that anger arises without a small 'I' sometimes. These
occasions seem to be dictated by a need and here the anger is not tinged
with a sense of self. I suppose the term 'righteous anger' can be applied
here, but I think this term can also be used as a copout. In these need -
dictated situations, I have found that the anger passes quite quickly and
doesn't leave disturbed feelings as do other outbursts.

I tend to agree that the anger can be viewed just as moving (or somewhat
blocked) energy. Nowadays, I still find myself getting irritated sometimes
but rather than focus on the apparent trigger, I will observe the feelings
and the energy and wonder 'what's this about?' I may well get an insight
into any issues cooking away. Obviously, this method only works if the
feelings associated are noticed when they begin to move. When the storm is
raging, other damage-limitation techniques have to be used! :)

What has helped me has been diet; ie regular complex carbohydrates, little
or no dairy products, no eggs etc. I'm sure everyones system is different
but the exploration of how foods etc effect my wellbeing has been
fascinating. Also daily chan/zen meditation, using silent illumination
,beginning and continuing with total body awareness. If K is really strong
then focussing on the dantien or soles of the feet when necessary really
help, as do Mystress' excellent grounding techniques.

Love Ron
