Subject: [k-list] Admin: member to member guideline reminders, and movin

Heh. Thanks for your support, percyval. Are you saying that you would like to rejoin the moderator team? you are welcome to, if you like. I understand that circumstances have changed, since you retired from that service.

I am actually, a little puzzled at your suggestion that the members reminding each other needs to be supervised. Members reminding each other is how most newsgroups handle guidelines, it is not a new idea. I trust the members to do the job, better than I trust myself!

I ran out of patience with that aspect of list management years ago. Burnout, frustration sometimes leads me to be pretty abrupt and more harsh than necessary, in this regard. I admit that. I'm glad to pass on the job, grateful to the volunteers and co-moderators.

Better for everyone, for me to focus my attention on doing what others cannot do: manage the website and other aspects of list admin.

I feel that requiring all member reminders to be forwarded to the moderators, or to any other address for supervision, is un-necessary, heavy handed, and kind of defeats the purpose and the intention of the concept. It is another level of control that we do not need, and would end up being more work than simply having the moderators do all the reminding. Really percyval, wouldn't it be easier to just remind people yourself, instead of supervising what other people do?

I am very grateful to the members who have agreed to help remind others of the guidelines, and I feel we can trust them to use appropriate discernment and manners. We are all adults, this is not kindergarden. I think probably, they will be a lot more polite about it than me!

I would prefer to handle things in the opposite way. Deal with complaints as (if) they come up, rather than having a watchdog over the whole process. It has been my longstanding policy, that anyone who feels they are being abused by a list member in private mail as a result of posting to the list, is free to forward the offending posts to the moderator address for resolution.

I think, it will be pretty obvious to *everyone* if someone continues to break the guidelines, :) there is no need to track how many reminders they receive. The new list *will* have an option to moderate some members.

I will be converting my hosting account to cpanel this weekend, and sometime after that, my current account and both lists will be deleted. I will have access to both systems at once, for a while before that occurs. Before I move the list, I will be creating a test list and playing around with it, so I can get to know the new system and resolve any problems before moving the main list.

I am hoping I can subscribe all current members to the new list and digest automatically, and have a smooth transition but at present I just don't know. The new list is supposed to have a web management option that requires all members to have a username and password, in which case members will need to subscribe themselves to the new list so they can choose a password...

or not, depending on how my webhost has customized the Mailman program. I just won't know till I get into it, and I cannot predict how quickly my provider will have the cpanel account set up.

   Stay tuned for updates!
