Well said, Hillary. The brain tends to create metaphors and other tangible
symbols to represent the spiritual and abstract. Unfortunately, many people
get stuck on the symbols and forget what they represent. This results in
attachment to the symbols and conflict between those that adhere to
different belief systems -- stupid.

Years ago I read a book on dream interpretation. One woman had this
recurring dream about her legs expanding until her pants exploded. She
wasn't sure what the dream meant, but felt it was important. A superficial
interpretation might be that she was overeating and concerned about getting
fat. However, after a few sessions with a psychologist she realized that
the dream was a metaphor. It was a cliché. She was becoming "too big for
her britches", and her subconscious was trying to send her a message in the
dreams.

Remember those neurological studies about stimulating the "god center" in
the brain? Of the 900 subjects, each reported a different experience.
Christians saw Jesus or the Virgin Mary; Moslems saw Mohammed; Buddhists saw
Buddha; Hindus saw Krishna; New Agers saw advanced aliens, etc. All these
visions came from the same stimulus, but manifested differently according to
the individual's culture and beliefs.

So, I think it's vital to understand that visions are just projections of
something deeper. Trying to put them into some external belief matrix
(like, it was this type of spirit or that) is looking in the wrong
direction. If I have a vision I try to remain calm and centered. Then the
vision is usually replaced by pure feeling -- spirit if you will -- beyond
name and form.
