"Om" is probably the more popular spelling, but I see both frequently.
Yogananda makes a case for the "AUM" spelling, as the three letters reflect
the three parts of the word, creating, sustaining, and decaying -- birth,
life, and death -- inhale, hold breath, exhale -- the Hindu trinity, etc.

Om is the original sound, the elemental vibration of the universe, the word
of God, the Amen sound, the sound of many waters, spirit... Again according
to Yoganana, when using the AUM mantra, once the mantra resonates with
internal sound, you should stop repeating the mantra and concentrate on the
internal sound itself.

I've actually heard many different internal sounds. There's a background
sound like a distant waterfall, as well as different pitches that are like a
pure sine wave. I've heard a 440 hz A, and an F and D below that. There's
also a very high pitch sound that's in excess of 10 khz. Some people say
these different pitches are associated with different chakras -- dunno.

When Kundanlini shoots up the center of the spine, the internal sound
becomes a loud roar and leads to transcendental experiences. On a side
note, a Zen master was asked about this internal sound, and his answer was,
"It is original sound. If you concentrate on it, it becomes louder".
hehehe -- typical Zen master type of answer :)
