Subject: [K-list] Physical Therapy
From: HSV & AAL

On 2003/01/06 05:36, HSV & AAL posted thus to the K-list:

I have Fibromyalgia, am overweight, have horribly cardiovascular
health, and live a sedentary life-style. I'm in a terrible state
of physical condition due completely to my own lack of motivation,
frustration, and fear. I rarely leave the house, except to go to
physical therapy and the doctor's office.

I've been in physical therapy for the last 7 or 8 months and
that's longer, by about 5 or 6 months, than I've ever continued
on any physical therapy program before. The only reason I
continued to go through this current torturous program is because
I actually improved greatly in the first 6 weeks. I go to two
different places, each twice a week. The first is an Orthopathic
therapist who presses and stretches my muscles with her hands,
attaches a plunger to my back and pulls, then sticks me onto an
inversion table and flips me upside down then twists me around.
Then I go to my Osteopath who twists me into multiple pretzel
twists to "pop" my bones/joints, then uses an excruciatingly
painful thing called the "trigger-band technique" on any
painful spots... of which I generally have several.

After the first 6 weeks, I had some family difficulties and
had to be out of therapy for about 2 weeks or so and my
incredible progress fled like a scared little girl. My pain
came back along with my limited movement. I went back to PT
as quickly as possible and vowed never to stay away so long
again... and I didn't. But it's been to no avail. I've made
little to no progress in these past 5 or so months. What made
it stagnate, I don't know. In any case, my doctor has told me
that if the PT isn't helping, I should stop it. So I have.

Now, here's my question. Has anyone tried pilates for any
length of time and how well does it work? I've been hearing
a lot about it lately. What I really locked onto is that it
supposedly retrains your muscles and body to move and work
in the proper way. After suffering for over a decade with
Fibromyalgia and pain, I'm certain I've learned a LOT of bad
habits with movement.

The thing is, I need something for the very lowest level
beginner because I really can't do very much. (Walking to
the kitchen and back sometimes leaves me out of breath) One
or two exercises to work on would probably be all I would need
for a while. And I don't have any money at the moment to buy
any equipment or videos (though I'll have tax money at the
end of the month), so I was wondering if maybe someone knows
a website with pictures that might have just a couple of very
basic beginner stretches/exercises.

All information is welcome.
