Subject: [K-list] Some interesting characters
From: Harsha

On 2002/12/22 16:44, Harsha posted thus to the K-list:

Someone mentioned Brahmananda Sarsvati, and it
reminded me of a story that may be of interest to
some, especially if one is interested in Kundalini
Shakti through Nada (the yoga of sound current).

Brahmannanda Sarasvati's original name was Dr.
Ramamurti Mishra (he was a medical doctor) and he
wrote wrote some interesting books on Nada (sound
current heard in ears) and pranayama with detailed
references to anatomy and made commentaries on various
yoga texts and sutras. He passed away but was an
interesting and funny character (and a friend of my
teacher) and often was in NYC in the 1970s where at
that time I was teaching Yoga.

One day, I ran into him in the Eastwest bookstore of
Swami Rama's people in Manhattan. He was standing in
front of Rajneesh's books and looking them over
(Rajneesh was called Bhagavan Rajneesh at the time and
later changed his name to OSHO).

Dr. Mishra (as he was known then) and I started
talking. Dr. Mishra started enthusiastically about how
great Rajneesh's discourses were. I was surprised
since I thought Dr. Mishra was a very orthodox Hindu.
But he was quite serious in his statements. I had
enjoyed reading Rajneesh's books of secrets which were
brilliant commentaries on yogic texts myself, but
somehow hearing Dr. Mishra on the topic made me laugh.
Seeing this Dr. Mishra praised Rajneesh more.

He was generally a jovial fellow and part of the gurus
of the 70s. Soon, he had us both laughing. His
students really loved him. Later in life, Dr. Mishra
had a stroke and lost the ability to speak normally
but could still sing bhajans very well. He became
Brahmanand Sarsvati in the last stages of his life. He
was a great advocate of the Nada method (sound
current) for Raj and Kundalini yoga and felt samadhi
was easiest to attain through the sound current. In
those days some people had mixed feelings about him
for the way he acted at times but he was an fountain
of information on various yogas and especially nada.

Love to all
Harsha
