I think the word "Atheist" didn't appear till 1800's, not sure about this. But to me, it always seemed that the Judao/Christian world needed a word/category that meant the opposite of what they believed to keep their oppositional dualism intact. Is there another culture, spiritual tradition that needs the word Atheist? I can't think of one.
