It's the latest new-age fad, from what I see on the internet. There are quite a few people making quite a lot of money peddling the idea that you can become a shaman through book or workshop. The worst of these (imo) is the foundation run by Michael Harner selling a concept called "core shamanism" and giving out degrees of proficiency. :o) It is now very hard for the spirit-taught shamans to get together without workshop shamans coming in, questioning everything, then asking for paper credentials. Funny, and a pain in the rear. But everyone's gotta start somewhere.
