Hello Gregor,

Here's one practical solution to sensative hearing. Earplugs come in
different ratings. Some have little holes which admit a small amount of
sound while blocking the really loud stuff. Might try a set of these when
you know your going to be making any amount of noise that you would find
disturbing. They should be available at any industrial safety equipment
store--someplace that sells fire extingishers, hard hats, safety shoes, etc.
Use them for a little while and then take them out for little while. Try to
slowly de-sensitize yourself to normal levels of sound again. Perhaps by
reversing the process that brought you to this level of sensitivity you can
bring it back down enough to be comfortable.

I have often meditated with earplugs and have experienced the sound
sensitivity you describe, though perhaps not as strongly. The chakras
(energy centers of the body) each generate their own unique sound. In
meditation I focus on these sounds, trying to hear the sound of the next,
higher chakra. Earplugs eliminate extraneous sounds and allow me to hear the
sounds of the chakras more clearly.

The energy shooting up the spine is definately a symptom of kundalini
activity. As this energy rises, it energizes each chakra and makes the
sounds more obvious.

Dealing with side effects of an active kundalini is a common topic on this
list. The usual way of calming errant energy is to re-ground yourself: Walk
barefoot in the grass, swim in the ocean, take a hot saltwater bath--one
friend of mine grounds herself by petting her big dog. Take some time and
bring the energy back to tolerable levels. Also when you meditate use a
mudra. These are positions which make the body "self-grounding" to some
degree during meditation. Legs crossed in "indian-style" seating position,
thumbs and forefingers of each hand touching with the hands resting on the
knees. Find a quiet place to meditate and focus on the sounds of the
chakras. Here are the sounds to listen for:

1st chakra, base of spine: Hissing sound, like the sound of wind.
2nd chakra, reproductive center: Crickets.
3rd chakra, just above the navel, personal power center: Pan flute.
4th chakra, heart center: bells or gong.
5th chakra, throat: high-pitched metallic ringing.
6th chakra, third eye, center of forehead: glorious trumpets.
7th chakra, crown chakra, top of the head: thunder, followed by the AUM
sound.

Good luck and keeping talking to us.
Welcome to the K-list!
