Subject: [K-list] Problems on the spiritual path - a deliberation
From: rkshankar

On 2002/07/24 18:02, rkshankar posted thus to the K-list:

As a typical Indian born and brought up in India, but who lived for 10 years in Africa, having returned permanently to India now,
I feel the problem on the spiritual path for the Easterners is no less; or possibly, even more and harder
1 A delusion that spirituality belongs to them, is the most common of the dis-eases.
2 And that, that spirituality is fully embedded in their day-to-day customs based on their beliefs
3 Which beliefs have no root in the Vedas, but in the group-mind of the society plagued by fear, lust, greed and so on.
4 For the most common Easterner, 'foreign Western country' is the real God;
they are more devoted to the Western secular education.
5 So, conceptualizing, analyzing etc, plague them more, possibly.
6 It may even be that they have deified conceptualizing, and they are not as good in it as are the Westerners
7 And, they cover up this real inferiority by showing up their customs
as encapsulating the consummating spiritual experiences of their Seers

I think the problem is one's involution in the society around.
Individuals have to become effective by gaining the ability to wonder.
'Could it be true', thus they should enquire into all that is put into them, from the very birth.
Then, they could impact the society and provide relief to it from its perennial ills,
having fully released themselves fully from it. And, this is common to all.

Again, conceptualizing is required for the ordinary life. And, that must be possessed by all in abundant measure.
Only, that faculty has to be enlarged for spiritual purposes. And, that enlargement is by growing into metaphysical logic.
This is recorded in the Nyaya Sutras of Sage Gautama. Thus enhanced, it becomes pure reason functioning directly on objects. Unlike the ordinary reason which relies on and infers from the data supplied by the senses.
But, pure reason directly works on the contents of sense-objects. Just as we can feel the weight of a thing by holding it in our palm. But, this in no way belittles the ordinary reason. Ordinary reason is the secular counterpart of the pure spiritual reason.
The feeling that one is a Westerner or Easterner is of the subconscious.
One can overcome it by resolving the mental-vital contents of the subconscious into the substance of spiritual light
by intently attending to its contents as and when they rise up before vision and thus resolving them.
And, spiritual Light is neither Eastern nor Western or it may be said to be both.

Yours in God
RK Shankar
