Police are investigating the deaths of two people whose bodies
were
found Wednesday in a Hoffman Estates condominium with gunshot
wounds
in the face and head.

Residents of the Moon Lake condominium building at 1765 Rebecca
Drive said they began noticing an unpleasant odor Tuesday
afternoon.By Wednesday morning, the smell on the second floor had become
overwhelming, said Tom Camiliere, a building maintenance worker.

He ascertained that it was coming from a second-floor studio
apartment owned by Mary Stevens and called police.

Around 9 a.m. Wednesday, police found the bodies of a man and
woman
on the floor, said Police Sgt. Ted Bos.

A Cook County medical examiner's spokesman identified the man as
Roy
Cook, age unknown, and the woman as Stevens, 44.

Public records show Stevens was 46 and Cook 49.

Autopsies are scheduled for Thursday, the medical examiner's
office
said.

Police said they did not know how long the bodies had been in the
unit.

Bos said Cook and Stevens had been companions in the past, but
their
relationship at the time of their deaths was unclear.

He said the last known address for Cook was in Texas. Bos also
said
police towed two cars belonging to Cook and Stevens from the
complex
to be inspected.

"At this point, it's too early to say a whole lot," Bos said.

Throughout the day, dozens of onlookers from the four buildings
that
make up the complex watched as investigators went about their
work.

Police officers collected evidence from the apartment and
canvassed
the area.

Neighbors said Stevens had been living in her condominium for
several years, but their only contact with her had been
occasional
greetings.Copyright © 2002, Chicago Tribune
