Ethical Principles of Reiki:

Just for today, do not worry.
Just for today, do not anger.
Honor your parents, teachers and elders.
Earn your living honestly.
Show gratitude to everything.
-Dr. Miao Usui

My Reiki Handbook, by Bodo Baginski and Shalila Sharamon discusses
an "exchange of energy" that may or may not have anything to do with
money. It might have to do with "darning socks" for me, bringing me
tomatos from the garden, or saying a prayer for me, or sending
positive energy to me in return for my treatments. Some people
cannot accept, or receive, without returning something to the giver.
They don't know the meaning of a "gift". They cannot benefit from the
energy they receive unless they pay something.

I don't require anything when I treat because I know that the energy
flowing through me helps me also, and because most people I treat are
friends or relatives. I have never charged for Reiki, nor have I ever
had to pay for it. But there is always an exchange of some sort.
I'm sure there are people who charge exhorbitant amounts for Reiki,
but I wonder if they would refuse it to someone who couldn't afford
to pay? My Reiki Master lowered her fee to teach me the Reiki
Mastery by 2/3, since I have been unemployed.

I also wonder if somone who chooses to practice and/or teach Reiki
for a living does not deserve a decent income. A treatment only
lasts an hour or less....but attunements are generally part of a
training program. Many more hours are involved. Most mastery
programs take a year. How much should a teacher charge for "being
there" for his or her student for a year?

It all seems confusing, I'm not even sure where I stand on this, but
I feel it all goes back to "Earn your living honestly."

Love, Rhoda
