Not really. The common ancestor could have been something like the tree shrew, a small mammal . . . the idea is that there were no apes or ape-like creatures nor humans when the split happened. The ape-like creatures came a long time after the split. And of course, if we going back far enough, according to the theory, all mammals evolved from a common ancestor too, which was probably something fish-reptile like. So it's not just the chimps and apes who are our relatives, but every species on earth is our cousin. I can't wait for the family reunion!
