hi Joe,

do you have any idea what "duty" means? you certainly seem to like the
word/concept... your wording implies it is something you understand that
most of us don't (unless you are including yourself among the clueless)...
please explain what "duty" means to you...

i personally don't often use the word, and even find the word distasteful...
that's because i can't recall ever hearing it used to mean something other
than acting on culturally imposed values, or some other strong ego
beliefs... i suppose that the folks who blew up the World Trade Center felt
they were performing their duty... the rescue workers who gave their lives
trying to save the other victims of that horror were also mostly performing
their duty...

as a New Yorker and American (and human?), my heart feels disdain for the
hijackers, and gratitude and sympathy for the rescue workers... so i am not
saying they were all doing the same thing... but all were likely doing their
duty as dictated by their cultural beliefs, as well as following their
hearts...

rather than deal with duty, i just follow my heart as best as i can, and try
to be practical about my choices... beyond doing that, why would i (or
anyone) need any sense of "duty"? or perhaps you use that word to mean
something similar to what i am calling "follow my heart"... but i don't want
to assume what you mean by it...

so many folks who believe they are "doing their duty" seem to do some nasty
stuff, and quite often impose their will on other folks without their
consent... why do you think this is a useful and important word?

warmly,

percyval
