Thank you for your post, Jason. It sparked a memory of a passage from the Tao Te Ching that I would like to share. I think it speaks to both your feelings and Joe's feelings. It is from the Gia-Fu Feng and Jane English translation:

A brave and passionate man will kill or be killed.
A brave and calm man will always preserve life.
Of these two which is good and which is harmful?
Some things are not favored by heaven. Who knows why?
Even the sage is unsure of this.

I think I agree with you about transcending good and evil, right and wrong. It doesn't mean that rape and murder are ok. They just are. Moral and immoral are judgement calls, another way of labeling things right or wrong. At the same time, such labels serve a purpose in the world.
